The FDA has also issued a newer safety announcement about Actos’ association with an increased risk of bladder cancer, particularly in men.

Actos Use – an Increased Risk of Bladder Cancer?

A 2011 FDA drug safety announcement reported that taking Actos for a year or more could be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer, particularly in men. Sales of Actos have been suspended in France after a study by the French National Health Insurance Plan concluded that Actos exposed patients to an increased potential for bladder cancer. Germany has also halted the use of Actos for new patients.

Additionally, there is an established link between Actos and congestive heart failure, requiring the medication to carry a boxed warning in the United States. Other serious Actos side effects include:

  • Edema (fluid retention);
  • Liver problems;
  • Fractures;
  • Macular edema (swelling in the eyes); and
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
